Its back alive again. Hahaz. Yeah actually been quite lazy to update my blog. Alright been more than one month since I last update. Time flies... I've been at work for the last 4 days already. Work is so tiring. Like my previous internship at YMCA, work life is so tiring. I think smu life is 10 times more xiong than life before SMU. Work life is 10 times more xiong than SMU life. Really hope I don't burn out at work.

Here's why: By spending 9 hours at work plus 2 hours of travelling and preparation time, I'll spend almost all my time that I'm "awake" dealing with work. Life everyday feels like I'm playing time crisis. So many tasks to do (targets to shoot) with a very limited time. Everyday I feel like getting myself out of this "game" but I cant. Guess I need to hang on and depend on my Source of strength and continue shooting all the targets so I can to get myself to the next stage. Though I never completed time crisis, I'll complete life a winner! Wahahahaha!

Internship's been quite slack. Basically need to call companies to ask if my company could organise financial seminars for them. Treat me like a telemarketer. Haiz..... Hope that I would learn something substantial during my internship.

Swine flu and me

The irony of swine flu: Creates and destroy jobs
Just yesterday alone I heard of a friend being offered a job as temperature taker and another friend got his internship cancelled as due to swine flu, the company needs to be restructured. I'm like????

My job is to get companies to allow my company to give seminars there. Because of swine flu, companies reject me on basis that they discourage visitors into their premises for the time being.

If swine flu breaks out in Singapore, public transport frequency would be cut down by 30%. As buses and mrt needs to be cleansed more frequently. Imagine how hard would it be to get into a bus or mrt during peak hours. If you need to reach office at 9am and takes public transport that need to transfer via bus or mrt like me, you might need to wake up 1 hour earlier to reach the same time.

Not only u need to come out earlier to take bus. Going into any crowded place would take longer. You will face long queues when going into cinemas or exhibitions. Not because of buying tickets but to take your temperature. Perhaps you might see a familiar friend working part time as temperature taker in the midst of all the people and he's the only happy one.

Right here in Singapore thousand of miles away from the epicentre of the virus we can feel massive shockwaves already. Really pray that we have already past the worst point of this episode.

Alright hope you have a great day ahead!

April Fooled

Got an sms from jireh (my P6 Cell Group Member) promptly send it out to my friends. Guess it applies to the way we treat our friends, parents and love ones. Do you treat them with real love?

1 Corinthians 13: 4-7
Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.

When I was 19

This is a summary of whole events that happen over the past 5 years. Well, probably have to stretch back all the way till my first year in SMU perhaps. Well, really felt that I have completed alot this week already though its on Tuesday so decided to chill for the next hour before sleeping.

Man, its week 11 of the SMU school calender and week 12 of this new year. 3 months have just flew past. This year's been wonderful so far but somehow always feel that more could have been done. Thank God that life is a preparation to eternity and there's so much for me to learn and prepare so that in eternity I'm a better person than I am now. Hmmm.... complicated. Perhaps thats how people write when they have nothing to do.....

Hmmm.... not sure what to write. Very seldom that I write with nothing to write in my mind. Maybe I come up with a wishlist:

1) Greater Self-discipline
2) Being a better conduit of love into my family
3) More influence over people around me
4) Spiritual Maturity

Alright time to say goodnight to the world...

The Fragility of Life

Long time sinced I last blog. Why? Yes you guessed it. The most common and forever right reason. BUSY. Well just couldn't get myself down to blogging. So many things I wanted to blog. Like how the government could abolish ERP and yet have smooth roads, the true meaning in life...... Well I guess I'll save those to another time. Here's some thoughts:

Guess as you get older, you go to visit the hospital more often and also see more of your loved ones passing on. That makes you realise that life is fragile and unpredictable. Like someone said, Change is the Only Constant in Life. You never know what will happen to anyone next.

Over the chinese new year, I got to visit my granduncle, which was diagnosed with the Kennedy's Disease (the same disease as Chew Chow Meng) Though the disease was incurable, it is not life threatening. That visit was like few weeks back and I could clearly remember the words that he said to us. But yesterday I was shocked to hear from my mum that he has passed on.

Life is short. In fact, life is just about a moment compared to eternity. Many say that life is a classroom where you learn and prepare for eternity. Life is precious, life is fragile. I thought of some keys we can hold on to live life to the fullest.

1) Live your Dream
I always say that live your life by living your dream. Was reading a book by Mr Peter Tan, a successful Singaporean entrepreneur, he said that " Fulfill your dreams while you are yet young." Would you rather start fulfilling your dreams now or allow your dreams to continue to remain as dreams when you are in old age? Life's fragile and unpredictable. Live your dream while you can still do it.

2) Take good care of yourself
Health is probably the most precious asset that you have. By taking good care of yourself you are preserving your life. Though life is unpredictable, you can cut down the odds against yourself by taking good care of yourself to improve your physical condition. Take good care of yourself by controlling the things you eat and having regular exercise. Besides preserving life, it also makes financially sense to take good care of yourself. As I have found out myself, even simple things like brushing your teeth properly or taking regular meals could save you a big sum of medical bills.

3) Treasure the people around you
Friends, parents, relatives and even enemies, people you meet, does not come into your life just by chance. They are supposed to make you a better person. Treasure and tell the people around you how much you appreciate them while you still can. Well, imperfections of people does exist thats why we might find it harder for us to love some people than others. For example, its not that easy to love and obey the instructions of a mum that contantly nags at you or love your neighbour that keeps stepping on your toe. Well, I tell myself that there's not too much chance left for me to obey my parents already. Let me just do it for them. :) I will give without expecting reward. Perhaps through the things I do for them they might be touched by my love and be changed.

These are some thoughts that came to my mind when I heard of my granduncle's death. Though I am not that close to him, there will always be a place in my heart for him.

Chinese New Year

Here comes the festive season again. Very very soon its Chinese New Year. From my sample size of 10, research extrpolates that it is a time where half of the people in the world look forward to it and half of the world find it boring. Why? To some its a time where they could catch up with their relatives again, some look forward to it because its a time to receive lotsa hongbaos or some look forward to it because they can gamble. Others find it a dread to do visitation, negotiate their way out of the jam in the most congested bridge in Singapore called the Causeway or some just hate springcleaning.

Well, no matter what reasons you like or do not like Chinese New Year, it is being celebrated all over the world by more than 1 billion chinese. Here's Chinese New Year from my perspective:

1) An Opportunity to Bring Back Love to Oour Family
Chinese New Year is perhaps the most busy time in a family. There's so much spring cleaning, things to be bought and other preparation of the house so that our home can be in tip top condition when our relatives visits. With so much work to be done at home, we could all help our parents. Doing our long overdue packing of our own room and chipping with housework is something that Mum would appreciate. :)

2) Be a Good Host
This is perhaps the time of the year where you have most visitors to your home. With most visitors we only see once a year, their impression that they have of us this season is going to last a long time. How we could be a good host? Perhaps when we notice a visitor that we are not really familiar alone at the corner of our house, we could take the step of faith to go forward to initiate the conversation with them so that they can feel comfortable at our home.

3) Honouring Elders
Again you don't meet your relatives everyday. Of course you need to honour our elders everyday but during Chinese New Year when we go for visitations, it is especially important that we honour and bless our elders in words. One way we can honour our elders is that we could make an effort to serve them. Instead of taking our food first we could ensure that our elders are served before we eat.

Anyway, enjoy your new year and happy holidays!

Facts about Hope

Long time since I last blogged. The reason being start school already so don't really have much time to blog. Anyway, actually in this post wanted to share this story about 4 candles. They are called Love, Peace, Joy and Hope. Its about how the flames of Love, Peace and Joy are being snuffed out but the candle of Hope relighted their flame. So that the 4 candles can continue to shine brightly. But I couldn't find the story on the internet. Hence I came up with this post on Hope. This has been in my head for awhile already and has been meditating on it so there you go, I call these Facts about Hope. I came up with all these on my own so maybe some you might or might not agree with me. Its alright.

Hope
Hope brings a smile to your face
Hope refreshes your spirit
Hope revives goals that was lost
Hope gives strength to the lost
Hope brings security
Hope destroy all fears
Hope precedes patience and patience reward
Hope brings joy to your soul
Hope held to the end never disappoints
Hope is believing in the things that are not yet seen
Hope brings a full reward in the manifestation of its fullness
Hope should be cling on to till the end
Hope is a cause to rejoice
Hope brings possibilities
Hope can change the world
Hope can bring joy to many others
Hope is a better word for you to feel right now than despair
Hope makes all things possible!

Well some people might agree or disagree with my findings. I just hope that this would inspire you to hope. I'm sure many atimes we will recall our disappointments and setbacks. By doing so we are like watching a bad movie staring ourself on a 42 inch high definition TV at the back of our minds. At the beginning of this year, let's not look to all the bad memories. Instead let's look to the bright year ahead that is only made possible through hope.

The Year Ahead

1st day of 2009, just as many people need to get used to the way of writing the dates, it would be the appropraite time to look to the year ahead. Actually wanted to look back at the past year but then thought I should not look back at past mistakes that cannot be undone, defeats, conflicts and victories. So here my targets for 2009:

Studies

Seems like I have finally entered into the final year of my studying life. Since thats the case, I need to end off with a BANG! Intend put in more effort for my studies so that I can be the best student that I can possibly be. Hope to be more discipline in my studies and place more focus on it. This would help me get a better GPA. Yup.

Family

Really learned alot about my family members through my dad's operation. For example, learned that my sister is more filial and loves my family dad, despite the hurtful past much much more than I thought . despite the hurtful past Here are some areas I am working on:

1) Build stronger bonds with my family
By being more patient with my family members and taking the extra effort by listening to them talk and talking to them. Perhaps should start by making more effort to visit my grandma more often.

2) To bear a better testimony at home
Through excellence in the things that I'm entrusted to do at home and good results in my studies.

3) Take up greater responsibility in my family
Can start by making an effort to do more housework

4) Salvation for my family
Hope that this year, I can help them to know God more and bring salvation to them!

Spiritually

Well, hope that this year would be another spiritual breakthrough year. Few weeks ago, I was asking myself why while most of my friends are occupied with things like managing their trading account or trying to secure a job in big firms, I spend most of my time sowing into the lives of my cell group members which are mainly teenagers from secondary school. Well, I concluded that the reason why thats the case is that there must be something that God needs me to learn that I haven't learn in the things I'm doing. So I should be faithful by focusing on the things that God placed in my life. Which is exactly my spritual target this year, to be of greater obedience to God and learn things God wants me to learn so that I am better equip to fulfill my purpose.

Relationship with Friends

As mentioned in my previous entry, I am really blessed to have great friends around me. This year, hope that I can be a better friend to my friends. Throughout the year, I might have neglected some friends through the deadly combination of busi-ness and lazi-ness. Really feel bad about that. So this year I will aspire to be a better friend to you. Haiz last year of school for me already. Hope that the good friends that found from my school life, would be able to stand firm through the test of time, business, distance and distractions.

These are mainly the targets and ambitions I have for the coming year. Despite all the bad reports that 2009 will shape up to be, I'm sure that 2009 would prove to be the best year yet for me! And it will be the same for you too :)

When you get Old......

Would like to continue the series of "How do you know you are getting Old?"

How do you know you are getting Old?

When you go to Long John Silver to order Combo 1, you give the cashier $4 and she says that it is not enough.

How do you know you are getting Old?

When you go to supermarket, they tell you that they do not accept 1 cent anymore.

How do you know you are getting Old?

When you find yourself complaining about yet another gst or transportation price hike.

How do you know you are getting Old?

When you notice more and more structures that hurt your wallets when you drive on the roads.

How do you know you are getting Old?

When you find yourself having to top up your cash cards more and more often.

How do you know you are getting Old?

When with 50 cents you can no longer buy ice cream cone from Mac Donalds

How do you know you are getting Old?

When Man City wins the title. I was thinking about what it really means to have a worthwhile life, and I concluded this morning that there is something more precious than money, and all the riches of this world - our friendships with one another. Some taxi drivers are chatty and taxi drivers somehow appear to be the most knowledgeable occupation in the world. Hmmm.... perhaps to the average person that hop onto the taxi.

Anyway, from the time we stepped into the taxi, the driver tried to engage my dad to a conversation. Somehow the conversation manage to find its way to criticising the government. Then the taxi driver complained of how the government is taking our money and how life is so meaningless in Singapore. Through his complains of the government, he gave some evidence that appear sound on the surface. I think after 5 sentences from him, my dad has already switched off and the conversation has became a mono-sation. My dad was now no longer following the conversation and was only trying to be courteous by nodding his head in agreement from time to time.

Though the taxi driver's argument might sound reasonable on the surface and most people might even agree with him and let out their grievances. Then at that point in time I was reminded of these famous words:

"Ask Not What Your Country Can Do For" John F. Kennedy, 1961

Well I was thinking that we all should be grateful that we are living in a place called Singapore and not Somalia. We all have a roof on top of us when we sleep and have food to eat when we are hungry. Was it not to quite a large extend that our government provided with us these basic needs and also gave us a fair chance to live our dreams in this nation. My point is, count your blessings and if you can make this world a better place, do it!

Supermarket Lesson

Was at the supermarket today. While queuing up at the cashier, I observe the person infront of me trying to buy cigarettes. He told the cashier which type he wants, then out of nowhere I heard a another voice giving the cashier clearer instructions on which cigarette he wants. This boy looked barely 15 and it was quite clear that he asked the uncle in front me to buy the cigarettes for him.

Seeing such a sight, I felt so sad for him and his future. How I wished I was some top notch social worker that could just walk straight up to him at that moment in time and talk to him and at the end of the conversation make him admit that buying the cigarettes was a mistake and make him promise not to do it again. Yeah guess I watch too much TV. Well, me being me, I did nothing except to give that boy a shocked glance.

After leaving the supermarket, I saw that boy walking towards his group of friends, all around his age and he shared his "purchases" with them. At that point in time, I felt so bad. Its like I feel that their whole life might have now gone down the drain. All the great things that is purposed in their life could not be accomplished if they continue this lifestyle. Thus the society is being deprieved of a potentially great sportsmen, businessmen, engineer, doctor, celebrity........ Well, you can argue that you would not know their, but I believe that if they channel their energies and focus on what they are good at, they'll have a great future.

All I could do now is only to pray for them that they would not go down the same path that many of their friends have taken. Feel so bad that I could not do anything for them. Let's love these people and do our best to try to make a difference to people around us whose life's purpose is in danger.

Good Friends

After a few post from monkey and penguin, it is time for me to take centre stage in my blog again. Its back to me blogging again. Since last week, my dad was hospitalised after an operation. I was thinking that through this incident, I discovered a couple of things about my friends.

First was daniel lee. After knowing that I'll be camping in hospital with my dad, he took time off his busy schedule to visit me. Was really touched when he came to visit me as after spending the whole day at the hospital, I was energise by his visit. The next day, I had to do an event for Uni-Y but had to be in hospital to look after my dad. What happened is that I was not able to get people to help me with the event. Only Eunice was able to come down that night and it was not enough, would at least need another person to help out in the event. After not being able to find people to help me out, I was quite dejected that night and I began to cast doubts if I know anyone that can be considered my friend. So before I went to sleep, out of desperation, I smsed daniel liew to asked if he could help me out. Secretly I was wondering if he could pass this test of friendship. To my pleasant surprise, he called me the next morning and promised to help me that night without any hesitation. Heaving a sigh of relieve, I thank God that my friends did not fail me when I needed them the most. Fast forwarded to this morning, I was pleasantly surprise when alan called to tell me that he's coming to visit me in hospital. When Alan turned up with breakfast and chichken essence for my dad, I was deeply touched. Next, I was touched when zhi wei came down all the way to chua chu kang to support me upon hearing that I'll be sharing my testimony to my cell group today. What is amazing is that I know that travelling and inconvenience is something that zhi wei doesn't like and he actually overcomed it just to support me. I'm really touched.

I was reminded of this verse:
For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.'
"Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?'
"The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'

(Matthew 25: 36 - 40)

What I want to say is that thanks so much for meeting my practical needs at the right time. I will remember this and will be a true friend to you!

What an amazing week it has been. I have been from praying hard for my dad's operation to rejoicing at the wonderful friends that I have. What is really amazing is that these are my friends from SMU. SMU is supposed to be a highly competitive place and yet I am blessed with these amazing friends around me. These friends and my cell group members are simply my biggest supporters on earth.

But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. (Proverbs 18:24)

Though you are not my brother (as in brother brother), you have choose to stick to me like a brother. Once again thanks so much!

Children - Part 3

Monkey: Hey Penguin, who is more intelligent children or adult?
Penguin: I know its a trick question. To my horror I got a C+. Thats the worst grade I ever had so far in my smu life. Upon realisation, I was of course sad and feeling lost. How could I get C+, I asked myself.

Why God did not help me. I asked. Then I was reminded of the story of Daniel in the bible. When he was thrown into the lion's den because of his test of faith, he entered in with total conviction that he was doing the right thing. He was even ready to enter into it even if God does not deliver him from the lions. Hence, he was even willing to die for his own faith. Then I told God, God I'm with you. I will continue to trust you and continue to serve you while in school even though I may not get good results but then, you know that I'm willing to do that right. So please do not test me in this area. Then I was reminded of one of the things that was said to me during this semester. Yihan said that even though your GPA is bad and life might seem gloomy to you, BUT God has said to you that he has a GREAT FUTURE for you. That alone is enough for you to be confident in your future. Cos no matter what happens, no matter how bad life is turning out to be right now, I can be assured of a good future if I trust in God.

Why everyone has a great future? I was asked by someone during bible study. I told him God created everyone differently for different purpose. Everyone's purpose though may be different but all of us are meant to do good works. (Ephesians 2:10) So if everyone's purpose is to do good works, then God's purpose for everyone must be good in the first place.

Bottomline: Though my GPA might suck, I still have faith that God will make a way for me to have a great future.
Doesn't mean I can slack and allow God to bring me to my future but let every step I walk be guided by God and give my all in everything I do.

Faith

Last saturday, went on msn and was greeted by a "hi" from mark. Well long time never talk to him might as well take the chance to talk to him.

Then he asked me how was I? That was 2 days after exams for me. So I said:" Alright. Just finished exams."

Next Mark asked me how was my exams. Feeling not very confident that I can get good results I answered:"Well, could have been better."

Then Mark said something astonishing: "The bible says those who sow in tears will reap with tears of joy"

Though I wasn't reading these words for the first time, it suddenly became meaning to me and convicted me. My goodness I put so much effort and sacrifices for God in the past semester and all these I have done in tears. Surely I should have more faith in myself that I can do well. Of course things done cannot be undone but I should have more faith in God from the past miracle experience from God. I should have more faith in myself that I can do well. Have been constantly telling people to have more faith and encouraging others. Back to myself I should have more faith in my own things.

Thanks Mark for the timely encouragement.

Pradox of Learning

Monkey: Hey penguin why do you study?
Penguin: So that I can gain more knowledge.
Monkey: Ok. Many definitions are formed by different people for exactly the same thing. For example,

Exams is defined a the most dreaded time of the year before holidays for most.

Others define exams as: A chance to reap rewards from all the hardwork put in for the whole semester.

True? Yeah having exams tomorrow so all my examples are centred around exams.

Well, sometimes you need to have better definitions about things that troubles you so that you will have a brighte outlook. Like for me, I should define

Family as a place where happy people come together and refresh each other.
School should be defined as a place you can learn many things if I put in more effort.
Cell group should be defined as a happy family made up of promising individuals.
Project groups should be defined as a group of capable people with diverse talents.
Friends as dependent people that will never let me down.

Then perhaps I would have a better attitude towards these so that I am more motivated to shape these to make it closer to my definition. Essentially its your thoughts that defines your world and your attitude towards it.

Bottomline: You want a good world, you gotta define it positively.

Alright gotta get back to studying.....

Let it be Over

Tuesday November 25 10PM

After a long while, its time to start blogging again. Well after 14 and a half weeks, its gonna be over soon. 2 more days and its gonna be holidays. This semester has been special for me. Will probably do a review of the semester in the next entry but this semester is definitely the busiest and most exciting semester for me in SMU.

With 1 more exam to go on thursday, its time to start planning again for the holidays. In no particular order:

1) Learn Guitar
After years of trying to learn guitar, still cant play properly. Hope that I can really accomplish something this holidays.

2) Start a business
My goodness this holiday to-do list is getting more and more familiar. Didn't I came up with the same things last year. Yeah I guess its the same. Guess its unfinished business that needs to be completed this holidays. Really need to get down and work out something this holidays.

3) Rest and Play
Think I deserve it man. I think the last proper break I had was one year ago now I got 1 month to have a proper break.

4) Go for Y Camp
Hopefully I can go for Y camp man. Think I might have kind of missed the registration deadline. Haiz.... hope they won't turn down passionate and exuberant volunteers like me. Hahaz.

Hmmm.... thats all I can think of now. This is perhaps the second last major holidays I am gonna have in my life. Gonna to make this the most exciting and fruitful holidays.
